Masai Mara vs Amboseli: Which Should You Choose?
Kenya's two most celebrated safari destinations, constantly compared. Both are extraordinary. But they are completely different experiences. The answer depends entirely on what you want to see.
The quick answer
Choose Masai Mara if: You want lions, cheetahs, leopards, the Great Migration river crossings, the most dramatic predator action in Africa, and a wilderness that feels infinite.
Choose Amboseli if: You want the world's best elephant photography, guaranteed close encounters with large elephant herds, and Mount Kilimanjaro as your backdrop for every shot.

The Masai Mara wildlife experience
The Mara has Africa's highest density of predators. Lion prides are habituated to vehicles. You can sit 3 metres from a sleeping lion pride without any of them stirring. Cheetah mothers with cubs cross open plains with extraordinary regularity. Leopard sightings, while requiring patience, are consistent in the Mara Triangle and Olare Motorogi Conservancy.
From July to October, the Great Migration transforms the Mara. Over 1.5 million wildebeest and 400,000 zebra fill the plains. River crossings, where tens of thousands of animals plunge into crocodile-infested water. Are the most dramatic wildlife moments available anywhere on earth.
The Amboseli wildlife experience
Amboseli has the highest density of elephants in Kenya, and these elephants have been studied and photographed for 50+ years. They are the most well-documented elephant population in the world. They are also the most relaxed around vehicles. Elephant families of 30–50 individuals move through the swampy basin, often with Kilimanjaro filling the entire horizon behind them.
This is the iconic Kenya safari image: giant elephant bull in the foreground, Kilimanjaro's snowcap behind, dusty Amboseli basin between. No other place on earth offers this composition.
Photography: which is better?
For predator and action photography: Masai Mara, without question. Cheetah hunts, lion kills on open plains, river crossings. The Mara offers the most dramatic wildlife action photography available globally.
For the iconic Africa image: Amboseli. The elephant-Kilimanjaro composition is one of the world's most recognisable wildlife photographs, and Amboseli is the only place on earth to shoot it.
For bird photography: Mara edges it on species diversity. For large flocks (pelicans, flamingos), neither. Go to Lake Nakuru or Bogoria instead.
Costs compared
| Cost factor | Masai Mara | Amboseli |
|---|---|---|
| Park fees (non-resident) | USD 200/day | USD 90/day |
| Budget camp (pp/night) | USD 150–250 | USD 100–200 |
| Mid-range lodge (pp/night) | USD 300–600 | USD 200–450 |
| Luxury lodge (pp/night) | USD 600–2,000+ | USD 400–1,500 |
| Charter flight from Nairobi | USD 200–400 each way | USD 180–350 each way |
| Drive time from Nairobi | 5.5–6 hrs | 4 hrs |
Bottom line: Amboseli is significantly cheaper. Lower park fees, lower accommodation costs, closer to Nairobi. The Mara is worth the premium if budget allows and you're visiting July–October for the Migration.
Best time for each
Masai Mara best months: July–October (Great Migration), January–March (dry season, excellent predator action). Avoid April–May (long rains).
Amboseli best months: January–February and June–October (dry season, clearest Kilimanjaro views). Morning is critical. Kilimanjaro is cloud-free at dawn but usually obscured by mid-morning.
Can you do both?
Yes. A combined Masai Mara and Amboseli itinerary is one of Kenya's classic safari circuits:
- 7-day itinerary: 3 nights Masai Mara + 2 nights Amboseli + 1 night Nairobi each end
- 10-day itinerary: 4 nights Masai Mara + 3 nights Amboseli + Lake Nakuru transit (1 night)
Fly between parks (30–45 minutes) rather than driving. Charter flights connect Mara airstrips to Amboseli Oltukai directly, avoiding Nairobi.
