M-Pesa safety and escrow protection

Booking via WhatsApp and paying M-Pesa directly to a landlord's phone number is common in Kenya, but it carries significant risk. If the property doesn't exist, or the landlord disappears, your money is gone. M-Pesa itself doesn't offer buyer protection for accommodation fraud.

On Cabana, your M-Pesa payment goes into an escrow account: not directly to the host. The money is only released to the host after you check in and confirm your arrival with your unique Cabana check-in code. M-Pesa travel booking tips

• Check your M-Pesa balance before booking. STK Push will fail if your balance is insufficient. You can combine M-Pesa and card payment for larger amounts on Cabana.
• Keep the M-Pesa confirmation SMS. It is your proof of payment. Save it until after you check out.
• Use the correct phone number. Your M-Pesa-registered Safaricom number must match what you enter at checkout. The STK Push goes to that number only.
• Large payments may require Lipa Na M-Pesa Business. For very large bookings (above KES 150,000), Cabana may use the Lipa Na M-Pesa Business payment flow rather than STK Push. The process is equally simple.
