Cabana vs Airbnb: Full Comparison
Airbnb is the world's most recognisable accommodation platform. Cabana is Africa's zero-commission alternative. This is the full comparison, not the marketing version. The honest numbers.
Commission: the fundamental difference
This is the entire ballgame. Everything else is secondary.
| Platform | Host commission | Guest service fee | Total platform take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabana | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| Airbnb | 3% host-only fee* | 6–15% guest fee | 9–18% total |
*Airbnb's "split" fee model charges hosts 3% + guests up to 15%. The older "host-only" model charges hosts up to 20% with no guest fee. Many African hosts are on the host-only model. Check your listing settings.
On a KES 10,000/night Nairobi apartment:
- On Cabana: Host receives KES 10,000. Guest pays KES 10,000.
- On Airbnb (split model): Host receives KES 9,700. Guest pays KES 11,200–11,500.
- On Airbnb (host-only model): Host receives KES 8,000–8,500. Guest pays KES 10,000.
Over 30 booked nights at KES 10,000: Airbnb takes KES 15,000–60,000 from a Nairobi host. Cabana takes KES 0.
What guests actually pay: the checkout surprise
Airbnb's biggest guest complaint is the checkout surprise. You find a KES 8,000/night apartment, it looks perfect, you get to payment and suddenly it's KES 11,500/night after the service fee and cleaning fee. This is not a minor quirk. It is by design.
On Cabana: the price shown is the price you pay. No service fee. No cleaning fee added at checkout (hosts may include it in their listed rate if they choose, but it is disclosed upfront). No booking surcharge. The guest checkout on Cabana is exactly what the listing shows.
Payment methods in Africa
| Payment method | Cabana | Airbnb |
|---|---|---|
| M-Pesa (Kenya) | ✓ Native. STK push at checkout | ✗ Not supported |
| Mobile Money (Nigeria, Ghana) | ✓ In development | ✗ Not supported |
| Visa / Mastercard | ✓ | ✓ |
| PayPal | In development | ✓ |
| Bank transfer | ✓ | ✗ |
M-Pesa is Kenya's dominant payment method. Used by 90%+ of Kenyan adults. The fact that Airbnb does not support M-Pesa in a country where M-Pesa is king tells you everything about how Airbnb views Africa. Cabana was built M-Pesa-first.

For hosts: which platform earns more?
This is simple arithmetic:
A Nairobi host with a Kilimani 1-bedroom at KES 6,000/night, booking 20 nights/month:
- On Airbnb (split model): KES 6,000 × 20 × 0.97 = KES 116,400/month
- On Airbnb (host-only model): KES 6,000 × 20 × 0.80 = KES 96,000/month
- On Cabana: KES 6,000 × 20 × 1.00 = KES 120,000/month
Cabana hosts earn more. Always. Because zero commission means 100% retention.
The verdict
For African travel, whether you are a guest or a host. Cabana wins on every measurable dimension that matters: commission (0% vs up to 18%), payment methods (M-Pesa vs card-only), African-built expertise, and feature set (Cabana Match, APA, flights, safaris. None available on Airbnb).
The one area where Airbnb has an advantage is global brand recognition and existing listing volume. More travellers globally know Airbnb than Cabana. This changes as Cabana grows, and the zero-commission model means that growth is structurally inevitable as African hosts recognise the difference.
