What makes Shela extraordinary is its setting. Adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage medieval Swahili town with no cars, where time operates differently. Staying in Lamu and walking to Shela for sunrise is one of the finest experiences in all of Kenya.

3. Watamu: most pristine

Kenya's most intact coastal ecosystem. Watamu sits within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The marine national park, mangrove forest and terrestrial habitats all protected. The reef diving is East Africa's finest. Hawksbill and green turtles nest October–March. Whale sharks aggregate July–September.

4. Tiwi Beach: Kenya's best secret

Tiwi is the forgotten south coast beach. Between the Likoni Ferry and Diani, accessible down a dirt road that most tourists miss. The beach is excellent and almost empty. Local banda (thatched cottages) rent for a fraction of Diani rates. The reef snorkelling is good.

If you want a genuine local Kenya coast experience without Diani's prices or crowds, Tiwi is the answer.

Best for: Budget travellers, those wanting quiet, repeat Kenya visitors who know the secret.
Best time: January–March and July–October.
Getting there: Likoni Ferry from Mombasa, then 15 km south by matatu or boda-boda.

5. Nyali Beach: most convenient

Nyali is the most accessible beach in Mombasa. A short bridge crossing from the island, near City Mall, with good accommodation stock. The beach is good but not exceptional compared to Diani or Watamu. For guests combining Mombasa city exploration with beach time, Nyali eliminates commuting.

6. Malindi: most historic
