Bamburi: the resort coast

Bamburi is 10 km north of Nyali. Mombasa's main resort strip. International hotels line the beach road (Sarova Whitesands, PrideInn, Travellers). The beach is wide and well-maintained. Water sports are concentrated here.

What makes Bamburi unique: Haller Park (a remarkable ecological restoration of former cement quarry into wildlife sanctuary. Giraffes, hippos, giant tortoises), Mombasa Marine National Park snorkelling.

Best for: Beach holiday focus, water sports, families wanting a resort feel without resort hotel prices.

Shanzu: quiet north coast

Mombasa Old Town & Island

Fort Jesus: built by the Portuguese in 1593, this coral stone fortress controlled the East African coast for centuries. One of Africa's finest examples of 16th-century military architecture. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Old Town: narrow streets, carved wooden doors, Swahili architecture, Indian spice shops, mosques and a fish market that has operated continuously for centuries. Best explored on foot in the morning.

Best for: Culture and history enthusiasts, photographers, travellers who prioritise experience over beach.

South Coast: Diani and beyond

The south coast is accessed via the Likoni Ferry from Mombasa Island. A short crossing but one that can take 30–60 minutes in queues during peak times. Once across, Diani Beach is 35 km south.

Diani Beach is Kenya's finest beach destination, 10 km of white coral sand, colobus monkeys in the trees, world-class kitesurfing and diving. It is worth the ferry queue.

Best for: The best Kenya beach experience. Guests staying 3+ nights who can make the south coast their base rather than commuting from Nyali.
