Gorilla Trekking: Uganda vs Rwanda 2026

Mountain gorilla trekking is one of earth's most extraordinary wildlife experiences. Both Uganda and Rwanda offer it. One is dramatically cheaper. One is dramatically more accessible. Here is the honest comparison.

The quick answer

Choose Uganda (Bwindi) if: Budget is a factor (permits cost USD 800 vs USD 1,500), you want a more rugged adventure, or you plan to combine gorillas with other Uganda wildlife (chimpanzees in Kibale, Queen Elizabeth tree-climbing lions, Murchison Falls).

Choose Rwanda (Volcanoes NP) if: Time is limited (easier logistics from Kigali, just 2 hours to the park), you want the most comfortable and smoothly organised experience, or budget is not a constraint.

Permit costs compared

Cost factorUganda (Bwindi/Mgahinga)Rwanda (Volcanoes NP)
Gorilla permitUSD 800/personUSD 1,500/person
Flight to nearest airportUSD 150–400 (Entebbe)USD 100–300 (Kigali)
Transfer to parkUSD 50–150 (8–9 hrs or 1 hr flight)USD 40–100 (2 hrs road)
Budget lodge/pp/nightUSD 80–150USD 120–250
Mid-range lodge/pp/nightUSD 200–400USD 350–700
Luxury lodge/pp/nightUSD 400–1,000USD 500–2,000

On a 3-day gorilla trek: Uganda saves each person roughly USD 700–1,200+ versus Rwanda when permits and accommodation are combined. For a couple, that is USD 1,400–2,400 saved. Enough for another entire trip.

The gorilla experience

Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi is a primeval forest, "impenetrable" is not marketing, it is accurate. The terrain is steep, the vegetation dense, the mud real. Treks take 2–8 hours depending on where the habituated group has moved. When you find them, and you always do. The encounter is in dense jungle, intimate and wild. You are 7 metres from a 200kg silverback male and he is not particularly interested in you.

Bwindi has over half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population across 18 habituated groups. The different gorilla sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo) mean you are unlikely to encounter other trekking parties at the gorillas themselves.

Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes NP is more compact, better organised, and the treks are generally shorter (2–5 hours average). The terrain is volcanic slopes. Steep but clearer than Bwindi. The park has 12 habituated gorilla groups. The organisation is exceptional. Rwanda Tourism has invested heavily in making this a smooth, premium experience.

The proximity to Kigali (2 hours) means many visitors do an efficient 2-day trip: arrive Kigali, drive to park, trek, drive back. This works. Uganda does not offer this because Bwindi is 8–9 hours from Kampala by road.

Accessibility compared

Uganda: Long journey to Bwindi. Either 8–9 hours by road from Kampala (scenically beautiful. You cross the equator and pass through tea plantations, but it's tiring), or a 1-hour charter flight from Entebbe/Kampala to Kihihi airstrip. Most operators recommend the charter for comfort.

Rwanda: 2–2.5 hours by road from Kigali airport to Kinigi (park headquarters). On good tarmac. This accessibility advantage is significant. It enables short 2-day gorilla trips that Uganda cannot match.

Frequently asked questions

How much does gorilla trekking cost in Uganda vs Rwanda?
Uganda: USD 800/person gorilla permit (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest). Rwanda: USD 1,500/person (Volcanoes National Park). Uganda is significantly cheaper. The permit alone saves USD 700/person, which is enough to cover 3–4 nights of accommodation.
Is gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda better?
Both are extraordinary. Uganda (Bwindi) is cheaper, wilder, and offers more gorilla groups. Rwanda is more accessible (2 hours from Kigali), better organised, and can be done as a short 2-day trip. For first-time trekkers on a budget: Uganda. For time-constrained travellers: Rwanda.
What is the best time for gorilla trekking?
Year-round. Gorillas are present every month. Dry seasons (June–September and December–February) make for easier trekking on drier trails. Wet seasons (March–May, October–November) are muddier but offer cheaper permits and fewer crowds.
How long does gorilla trekking take?
Trek duration varies: 1–8 hours to find the gorilla group. Once found, you spend 1 hour with them. This is fixed by regulation, globally, to protect the gorillas. The gorilla encounter itself is 60 minutes regardless of how long the trek takes.
