Best Beaches in Kenya 2026
Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline stretches 536 kilometres from Somalia to Tanzania. Behind the reef, the water runs warm and turquoise year-round. Here are the best beaches. Ranked honestly.
1. Diani Beach: the clear #1
10 kilometres of white coral sand. Reef-protected, warm, clear water. Colobus monkeys in the fig trees. World-class kitesurfing at Galu. Consistently ranked in Africa's top beaches. Diani is Kenya's finest beach destination and it is not particularly close.
Best for: All beach visitors. Beach lovers, kitesurfers, divers, families, couples.
Best time: January–March and July–October.
Getting there: 50 minutes by air from Wilson Airport Nairobi to Ukunda Airstrip.

2. Shela Beach, Lamu: most magical
A 30-minute walk or donkey ride from Lamu town, Shela Beach is several kilometres of white sand backed by dunes with almost no development. The Indian Ocean is calm and clear. The only sounds are waves and wind.
What makes Shela extraordinary is its setting. Adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage medieval Swahili town with no cars, where time operates differently. Staying in Lamu and walking to Shela for sunrise is one of the finest experiences in all of Kenya.
Best for: Those who want beach combined with exceptional cultural experience.
Best time: October–March.
Getting there: 1.5-hour flight from Wilson Airport to Manda Island, then 5-minute dhow to Lamu town.
3. Watamu: most pristine
Kenya's most intact coastal ecosystem. Watamu sits within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The marine national park, mangrove forest and terrestrial habitats all protected. The reef diving is East Africa's finest. Hawksbill and green turtles nest October–March. Whale sharks aggregate July–September.
The beach itself is spectacular. Fine white coral sand, very little development, uncrowded even in peak season. Watamu rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Best for: Diving, snorkelling, sea turtles, whale sharks, unspoiled natural environment.
Best time: October–March (turtle season); July–September (whale sharks).
Getting there: Fly to Malindi Airport (MYD) from Wilson Airport Nairobi, then 25-minute transfer.
4. Tiwi Beach: Kenya's best secret
Tiwi is the forgotten south coast beach. Between the Likoni Ferry and Diani, accessible down a dirt road that most tourists miss. The beach is excellent and almost empty. Local banda (thatched cottages) rent for a fraction of Diani rates. The reef snorkelling is good.
If you want a genuine local Kenya coast experience without Diani's prices or crowds, Tiwi is the answer.
Best for: Budget travellers, those wanting quiet, repeat Kenya visitors who know the secret.
Best time: January–March and July–October.
Getting there: Likoni Ferry from Mombasa, then 15 km south by matatu or boda-boda.
5. Nyali Beach: most convenient
Nyali is the most accessible beach in Mombasa. A short bridge crossing from the island, near City Mall, with good accommodation stock. The beach is good but not exceptional compared to Diani or Watamu. For guests combining Mombasa city exploration with beach time, Nyali eliminates commuting.
Best for: Guests combining beach and Mombasa city/Old Town. Family beach days.
Getting there: 10 minutes from Mombasa island via New Nyali Bridge.
6. Malindi: most historic
Malindi has a good beach (Silversands stretches for kilometres) but its real distinction is cultural: Kenya's oldest surviving coastal settlement, with Arab traders, Portuguese explorers, and Swahili culture layered over centuries. The Italian expat community has created an excellent restaurant scene. The UNESCO-candidate Old Town and the Marine National Park make Malindi more than just a beach destination.
Best for: Those wanting cultural depth alongside beach. Repeat Kenya visitors.
Getting there: Direct flights from Wilson Airport Nairobi to Malindi Airport (MYD).
